Welcome to our charming gîte in the Cotentin, between Barneville-Carteret and La Hague.
I’m Anne, your host. I know the Cotentin like the back of my hand—I was born in Cherbourg, grew up in the Val de Saire, and have been living in La Hague for 10 years.
Are you planning to visit the Cotentin for a weekend and want to know the must-see spots? You’re in the right place! In this article, I’ll guide you through three days of discoveries in this remote and breathtaking region of Normandy.
After a good and restful night at your gîte, Le Pressoir, I invite you to set off to explore La Hague, also known as Little Ireland, located at the northwestern tip of the Cotentin, about 20 minutes from the gîte.
La Hague is the wildest and most unspoiled region of the Cotentin. It is characterized by dramatic cliffs, windswept moors, pebble beaches, and charming villages such as Goury and Auderville. Renowned for its rugged coastline, scenic hiking trails (including the GR223), and untamed nature, it offers breathtaking views and an authentic atmosphere, far from mass tourism.
Between beaches and dramatic cliffs, this unique site at the heart of Cap de la Hague promises an unforgettable experience. Choose your path: an easy hike accessible to all or a segment of the famous GR® 223 coastal trail.
Located between Goury and the Nez de Jobourg, Écalgrain Bay reveals a sandy and pebbled beach surrounded by a lush, wind-sculpted landscape. Moors, heather, and gorse blend harmoniously, creating a wild and rugged setting. The westward exposure makes it a popular spot for watersports and an ideal take-off point for paragliders. Finally, the bay offers a breathtaking panorama of the Channel Islands and the Raz Blanchard tidal race.
An icon of La Hague, this imposing granite tower stands watch over Goury’s small port, powerfully illuminating and guiding sailors. Take a moment to admire it, but also to soak in the exceptional scenery. In front of you: the Channel Islands. Around you: a breathtaking landscape, enhanced by the golden hues of sunset. Located 800 meters offshore from Cap de La Hague, this lighthouse offers a stunning setting for your photos, where land and sea blend in perfect harmony.
The most picturesque port in La Hague is undoubtedly Port Racine, in Saint-Germain-des-Vaux—and also the most photogenic! Known as the smallest port in France, it covers only 800 m², with an entrance framed by two jetties measuring just 11 meters wide. A true postcard setting!

Set off on foot from your gîte, heading north along the Sentier des Douaniers, toward the Biville Dunes! These vast dunes actually begin in Siouville, just a 30-minute walk from the gîte. Pack a picnic and enjoy a refreshing swim in Siouville. In season, treat yourself to a delicious artisanal ice cream, before heading back to the gîte for a cozy and relaxing evening.
Another stunning walk leads you to Le Rozel directly from the gîte. The breathtaking landscapes along the way make it a must-see for nature lovers!
A short 20-minute drive takes you to a completely different kind of landscape: the largest coastal haven of the Côte des Isles. Sheltered from the west winds by the Cap de Carteret cliffs, this area is framed by the villages of Carteret to the northwest and Barneville to the northeast.
From the estuary, boats set sail from the harbor toward the Channel Islands. As a protected natural area, the Havre de Carteret reveals a landscape that transforms with the tides and seasons, providing a haven for migratory birds—a delight for birdwatching enthusiasts! With every rising tide, seawater flows inland, blending with the waters of two coastal rivers, creating an ever-changing, picturesque scene.

Let me introduce you to my homeland: the Val de Saire, with a special focus on Barfleur and Gatteville-Phare.
Here, life revolves around tourism, fishing, and agriculture. You’ll fall in love with picturesque villages like Barfleurand Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, stunning beaches, and impressive Vauban fortifications—historical gems that add to the charm of this beautiful region.
I invite you to make a stop in Barfleur. Of course, enjoy the breathtaking landscapes, but also take the time to admire the charming houses and the architectural details that give the village its unique character. A lovely walk behind the church, along the beach toward the Gatteville Lighthouse, is perfect for taking in the view.
For a drink on a terrace, stop by the Café de France, a true local institution, where I had the pleasure of working for two summers in my 20s. A wonderful memory!
Take the amphibious boat to Tatihou Island, located off Saint-Vaast. The island is home to a very interesting museum about the sea and the history of the island. Enjoy the chance to observe the birds and admire the rugged coastline.
A lovely little walk around the Fort de la Hougue is a great option after lunch. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings and soak in the history of the site.
Head to Saint-Vaast, a charming coastal resort on the East coast, for a bit of shopping. Check out Gosselin for local products or visit the La Chaloupe bookstore for a peaceful browse through a selection of books.
Jonville and Crabec at Gatteville-Phare are my top picks for the perfect beach day. Whether you’re into relaxing on the sand or exploring the coastal scenery, these beaches offer something special.
